Pathan believes longer ODI series and more multi-nation tournaments are needed to keep Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma match-fit and in rhythm ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

He suggested five-match ODI series instead of the usual three, along with triangular and quadrangular tournaments, to build continuity and sustain interest in the format.

Pathan said ODI cricket has seen renewed attention mainly because Kohli and Rohit now play only this format for India, making every appearance count for fans and broadcasters.

“Why can’t we have five ODIs instead of three? Why can’t we have a triangular or quadrangular series?” Pathan said during a discussion on Star Sports.

He added that it would not be wrong to say ODI interest has returned largely because of these two players, calling them the biggest pull for the format right now.

With the World Cup still some distance away, Pathan stressed the need for regular high-level game time so the senior batters stay sharp and avoid long gaps without competitive cricket.

He also advised Kohli and Rohit to keep playing domestic matches whenever they are not on national duty, saying more cricket only helps with fitness and timing.

Both players recently turned out in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, playing two matches each for their state teams, which drew huge attention from fans.

Kohli is keen to play another game for Delhi around January 6, while Rohit is set to return to action in the New Zealand ODI series starting January 11.
