KKR did not retain the 37-year-old for the 2026 auction. The decision surprised many fans, but it also opened up a large part of the team’s purse. Soon after, Russell stepped straight into a new job as KKR’s power coach, keeping his connection with the franchise alive.

Russell said the physical and mental load of the tournament pushed him to call time. He spoke openly about how tough it had become to manage travel, recovery, training and match days.

He told Cricbuzz, “It is based on the number of games and the travel. You have to make sure that you recover as well as possible to stay fresh and manage your body.”

He added that players need to train hard but also be careful not to overdo it. Russell also explained why being an all-rounder in the IPL is especially demanding.

He said, “With a big league like the IPL, it is always challenging for me as an all-rounder. To bat, bowl and then do catching and fielding stuff is always challenging.”

He ruled out playing as a specialist batter, saying it would not feel right to contribute only half his skill set in such a huge league.

Russell leaves behind a strong legacy at KKR. He scored 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174 and picked up 123 wickets in 140 matches. He was part of title-winning squads in 2014 and 2024, and his power-hitting made him a crowd favourite across India.
