Ajit Agarkar Reveals Reason Behind Mohammed Shami’s Omission from West Indies’ Series

Ajit Agarkar explains why Mohammed Shami was not selected for India’s West Indies Test series.

BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar explained why Mohammed Shami was not picked for India’s Test series against the West Indies. Shami last played in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia and had limited matches in domestic cricket recently.

Shami featured in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone but did not impress. Agarkar said the pacer hasn’t played enough matches over the past few years and needs more domestic games to earn a place in the national team.

“I have no update. He played in the Duleep Trophy, but he hasn’t been a part of a lot of matches in the last few years. He played one match for Bengal and one in the Duleep Trophy. We know about his skills and capabilities, but he will have to play cricket,” Agarkar said.

Shami recently dismissed retirement rumors, saying he can still perform with the ball. Agarkar also said the selection panel is focusing on creating a pool of fast bowlers.

“We are always in search of fast bowlers. India will not play overseas matches for some time, so we can wait. We want to create a pool of fast bowlers because the pacers get injured. You need backup,” he added.
