Ollie Robinson produced one of the most dramatic opening overs seen at Lord’s as England hit back strongly against New Zealand on a chaotic first day of the first Test.
After New Zealand bowled England out for just 140, the visitors looked set to take control. Instead, Robinson ripped through the top order with a sensational triple-wicket maiden that left the Black Caps stunned and struggling.
The Sussex seamer struck with the third ball of his first over when Devon Conway was trapped LBW for just one. Robinson sent down a superb nip-backer that jagged sharply down the famous Lord’s slope and beat the opener’s defence.

Two balls later, Kane Williamson departed for a duck. Robinson forced the New Zealand star into a defensive push with an inswinger, producing an inside edge that looped to short leg. The dismissal came moments after England captain Ben Stokes had moved Emilio Gay into the catching position.
The final ball of the over completed a remarkable sequence. Rachin Ravindra was trapped LBW first ball, giving Robinson three wickets in four deliveries and a rare triple-wicket maiden.
Robinson made full use of the gloomy conditions and the natural slope at Lord’s. He repeatedly shaped the ball into left-handers and away from right-handers, creating constant uncertainty for New Zealand’s batters.
Rather than relying on extreme pace, the fast bowler focused on a probing line and length around off stump. His accuracy and movement proved too much for the visitors’ top order.
Robinson returned later to remove Daryl Mitchell, clean bowling the experienced batter as New Zealand slipped to a disastrous 29 for 6. Although the visitors recovered slightly, they still ended the day in deep trouble.
The pacer finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 10 from six overs, conceding runs at an economy rate of just 1.67. It was a spell that completely changed the direction of the match.
The performance also carried extra significance for Robinson personally. The fast bowler had not played Test cricket since February 2024 amid fitness concerns and questions over his long-term future. His display at Lord’s offered a strong response to critics and rewarded the impressive form he showed for Sussex in domestic cricket.
A remarkable opening day saw 16 wickets fall in just 59 overs before bad light ended play early. New Zealand closed on 61 for 6, still trailing England by 79 runs in a Test match that remains finely balanced despite the early carnage.
