IND vs NZ 2026: Ashwin Says Shami’s ODI Snub Was Expected, Backs Siraj for Future Plans
Ashwin says Shami’s ODI omission was expected, backs Siraj’s return, and explains India’s long-term bowling plans for 2027.
Ravichandran Ashwin has said Mohammed Shami’s omission from India’s ODI squad against New Zealand was expected and not a shock. He explained that selectors are looking at the long-term picture and have doubts over Shami’s fitness heading into the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin said fast bowlers face a much heavier workload than batters. That makes it harder for selectors to plan three to four years ahead, especially after injuries.
Ashwin pointed out that Shami’s case is not about skill but about “optics”. He said selectors are likely assessing whether Shami’s run-up, pace, and rhythm still match the standards required for international cricket.
“Shami’s exclusion was expected. There’s no surprise in that,” Ashwin said. “For a bowler, the question is whether the run-up, speed, and rhythm are the same as before. Do the selectors believe he can reach the 2027 World Cup?”
Mohammed Shami has not played for India since the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. He missed international cricket due to injury while others continued to play Tests or T20s, which Ashwin said also affects selection decisions.
Shami is currently playing domestic cricket for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has taken 11 wickets in five matches at an average of 22.27 and an economy rate of 5.65, showing he is still competitive.
Ashwin also backed the recall of Mohammed Siraj, calling it a smart move by the selectors. He said India need experienced fast bowlers alongside Jasprit Bumrah as they build towards the 2027 World Cup.
“Siraj’s coming back was well deserved,” Ashwin said. “India know they need experience for the 2027 World Cup. With Bumrah, you need Siraj’s experience as support.”
He added that while youngsters like Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna are in the mix, India cannot field all three together in ODIs without senior guidance.
Ashwin said the current selection shows clear thinking, with selectors balancing present needs and future goals. According to him, the focus is on building a bowling group that can last till the next World Cup, even if that means tough calls in the short term.
