Smriti Mandhana Breaks ODI Records, Becomes Fastest to 5,000 Runs
Smriti Mandhana becomes the first woman to score 1,000 ODI runs in a year and fastest to 5,000 ODI runs in history.
Smriti Mandhana created history during India’s Women’s World Cup clash against Australia in Visakhapatnam, becoming the first woman in ODI cricket to score over 1,000 runs in a calendar year.
She came into the match on 982 runs from 17 innings and reached the milestone with a boundary off Sophie Molineux.
Mandhana’s journey in the tournament had been mixed. She scored just 8 against Sri Lanka, 23 against Pakistan, and 23 against South Africa. But against Australia, she finally found her rhythm.
After taking a single off the first ball and giving Pratika Rawal the strike, she capitalised on a loose delivery from Molineux, hitting a boundary and then a six to cross the historic 1,000-run mark.
In addition to the record, Mandhana reached her fifty in just 46 balls, dominating the Australian attack and giving India a strong position in the match.
She also became the fastest woman to reach 5,000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in only 112 innings while facing 5,561 balls, surpassing legends like Stafanie Taylor, Suzie Bates, and Mithali Raj.
This year, Mandhana amassed 1,062 runs in 18 matches, surpassing Belinda Clark’s 970 runs in 1997.
Her consistency in 2025 has included four centuries and four fifties, with a top score of 135. Earlier in the home series against Australia, she scored two centuries, including the fastest by an Indian woman in ODIs.
