Farhan says gunshot gesture during Asia Cup 2025 clash with India was not political, cites Dhoni and Kohli.

Sahibzada Farhan clarified at the ICC hearing on Friday that his on-field gunshot gesture during Pakistan’s Super 4 clash against India in the Asia Cup 2025 was not politically motivated. He said he did not intend any political message.

Farhan cited past examples of former Indian captains MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli using similar gestures in celebrations. He added that, as a Pathan, such gestures are part of cultural expressions and are commonly seen during joyous occasions like weddings.

He attended the hearing after India filed a complaint with the ICC against him and Haris Rauf for provocative gestures. Farhan had made the gesture after scoring his 34-ball half-century, giving Pakistan a flying start.

Rauf also faced criticism for his actions. After taking key wickets, he displayed a ‘6-0’ hand gesture and mimicked a fighter jet being shot down, gestures seen as provocative and linked to political tensions.

Both players are likely to face fines ranging from 50 to 100 percent of their match fees. Suspensions or bans are not expected. Farhan insisted it was a personal celebration and said he was unconcerned with how others interpreted it.

Pakistan qualified for the Asia Cup final on Thursday after an 11-run win over Bangladesh. After consecutive losses to India, Salman Agha’s side will face India on September 28, aiming to end their 13-year wait for an Asia Cup title.
