BCCI to decide Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future only after 2026 T20 World Cup, report says focus is on T20s now.

While there has been speculation that the BCCI is looking beyond the two veterans in the 50-over format, the board is reportedly in no hurry to make that call.

BCCI focusing on T20 plans for now

The report says that all current planning is centred around the T20 World Cup 2026, which is the immediate priority for the selectors and team management.

Suggestions that the BCCI has already decided to move on from Kohli and Rohit in ODIs are being dismissed as speculation.

The pair last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where both were instrumental in the team’s title win over New Zealand.

Kohli scored 218 runs in five innings at an average of 54.50, while Rohit provided crucial starts, scoring 180 runs in the tournament.

Age factor sparks debate

Despite their continued ODI success, questions remain over whether the duo should play the next ODI World Cup. Kohli is now 36 and Rohit 38, and many feel the transition to younger players should start soon.

If Rohit steps away from ODIs, Shubman Gill is the front-runner to take over the captaincy. The 24-year-old has impressed in his early stint as Test captain and is currently ODI vice-captain.

For now, fans will have to wait until after the T20 World Cup to know whether two of India’s modern greats will continue their ODI journey.
