IND vs ENG: “Slip Ups in the Slips” – India’s Catching Woes Threaten Test Campaign in England

India’s poor catching efficiency in England series proves costly, with 18 drops contributing to 1-2 scoreline.

India may be behind 1-2 in the ongoing five-match Test series in England, but it’s not due to a lack of skill in batting or bowling. Instead, poor fielding especially dropped catches has repeatedly turned strong positions into missed opportunities.

Catching the Problem

India’s catching efficiency in the series so far is just 60.90%. Out of 46 chances, they’ve held only 28 and dropped 18. In comparison, England have taken 36 of their 46 chances, with a sharp 78.30% success rate.

These drops have played a big role in how the matches have turned out.

At Headingley, after scoring 471 in the first innings, India dropped five catches. That allowed England to come within just six runs. On Day 5, Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped Ben Duckett on 97, he went on to score 149. Bumrah also missed a tough chance off Zak Crawley, who added 65.

In the third Test at Lord’s, fielding issues returned. KL Rahul dropped Jamie Smith on 5, who went on to make 51. Smith and Brydon Carse (56) added over 100 runs for the last three wickets. England’s total of 387 turned out to be the game-changer in their 22-run win.

Fielding Made the Difference

Interestingly, India had looked much sharper in the second Test at Birmingham. Better catching helped them dominate and win by 336 runs.

But without consistency in the field, even good bowling spells lose their impact. India’s bowlers have created enough chances, but the fielders haven’t backed them up.

With two Tests left, India must raise their standards in the field if they want to bounce back and save the series.
