IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill Creates History, Becomes First Asian Captain to Win at Edgbaston
Shubman Gill becomes first Asian captain to win a Test at Edgbaston as India thrash England by 336 runs in historic victory.
Shubman Gill has made history at Edgbaston. On Sunday, July 6, the 25-year-old became the first Asian captain ever to win a Test match at this iconic English venue.
India defeated England by a massive 336 runs, not only levelling the series 1-1 but also rewriting several records in the process.
No captain from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or Bangladesh had ever won a Test at Edgbaston before. That changed under Gill’s leadership.
Youngest Indian Captain to Win Overseas
At just 25 years and 301 days, Gill also became the youngest Indian captain to win a Test outside India. He broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record, who was 26 years and 202 days old when he led India to a win in New Zealand in 1976.
And it wasn’t just his captaincy. Gill was also India’s best batter in the match.
Record-Breaking Batting Performance
Gill scored 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, ending the match with a staggering 430 runs, the most by any Indian in a single Test match. The previous record was held by Gavaskar, who made 344 runs in 1971.
Gill’s first-innings double century was the highest ever by an Indian captain in Test cricket, breaking Virat Kohli’s record of 254 set in Pune in 2019.
He also became the first Asian captain to score more than 200 runs in an innings in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).
India’s 336-run win is now their biggest Test victory outside India.
With this win, Gill joins an elite list of Indian captains, Ajit Wadekar, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, who have won Test matches in England.
Gill’s outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award, and it’s safe to say this Test will go down as one of the most memorable in India’s cricket history.
