Ishant Sharma became only the third Indian fast bowler to take 300 Test wickets after dismissing England batsman Daniel Lawrence in the ongoing first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan are the two pacers ahead of him, with 434 and 311 wickets, respectively.
Ishant was India’s most effective bowler in the first innings too, when he had picked up the wickets of Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer off consecutive deliveries and finished with figures of 2/52 in 27 overs even as England put up a huge total.
Ishant, though, is the slowest Indian bowler to make the mark in 98 matches, with Ashwin being the fastest to the spot in 54 matches, followed by Anil Kumble (66), Harbhajan Singh (72), Kapil Dev (83) and Zaheer Khan (89). Ashwin, in fact, is the fastest international bowler to have crossed the milestone.
Ishant reached the landmark when he trapped Dan Lawrence with a delivery that swung back sharply before hitting his pads in England”s second innings on the fourth day of the opening Test here.
“Congratulations @ImIshant. He becomes the third Indian fast bowler to take 300 Test wickets. He traps Lawrence in the front as England lose their third wicket,” the BCCI tweeted soon after his accomplished the feat.
The ICC also lauded the seasoned fast bowler”s achievement, coming after more than 13 years of toil.
“Ishant Sharma becomes the third India pacer after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to reach the 300-wicket mark in Tests. What an achievement!” the game”s global governing body tweeted.
Meanwhile, current and former cricketers alongside fans have been posting congratulatory wishes on Twitter.
