In a shocking development, Tamim Iqbal has decided to step down as Bangladesh’s ODI captain, and been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 due to back injury.
Notably, this marks the second instance of Tamim Iqbal announcing his retirement from international cricket. In July, he declared retirement, but after a conversation with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he reversed his decision.
In ODIs, he is Bangladesh’s most successful batter, having amassed 8313 runs from 241 matches at an average of 36.62, including 14 centuries and 56 fifties.
As captain, Tamim led his team in 37 ODIs, out of which Bangladesh won 21. His win percentage reads 60, which stands as the highest among all 15 captains who never led the national side. This includes Mashrafe Mortaza, the most-capped captain, with a win percentage of 58.13.
