The ICC World Cup 2023 delivered its first major shocker as Afghanistan outshone England with a convincing 69-run win at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
This emotional victory stirred the hearts of players and fans alike, leading to a touching scene where a young fan shared an emotional hug with Afghanistan‘s spinner, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, shedding tears of joy.
While many on social media initially assumed the emotional fan celebrating Afghanistan’s victory over England was an Afghan child, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, clarified on social media that the emotional fan seen celebrating the team’s victory against England was actually an Indian fan who wholeheartedly supported the Afghanistan team.
The Afghanistan spinner also extended his thanks to the Delhi crowd for their tremendous support during the Afghanistan vs England match.
Taking to X [Formerly Twitter], here’s what Mujeeb Ur Rahman wrote:
“It’s not afghani boy it’s one young Indian boy so happy for ur win It was absolute pleasure meeting this little guy from India Delhi last night (Cricket is not just a game it’s an emotion). Big thank you to all our amazing fans for coming down and supporting us last night the love and support is overwhelming.
“We are grateful for your continuous support and we can’t wait for you to keep supporting us in the future. Thanks for love, Delhi.”
Afghanistan’s World Cup journey began on a low note with consecutive losses to Bangladesh and India. However, they made a strong comeback in their most recent match, clinching victory against England. Rahmanullah Gurbaz shone with the bat, while Rashid Khan, Mujibur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, and Naveen Ul Haq were instrumental heroes with the ball.
