New Zealand’s star batter Glenn Phillips made a mockery of the Sri Lankan bowling lineup as he notched up a sensational century at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 29.
The 25-year-old Kiwi, who was dropped at 12 off 15 in the sixth over, reached the three-figure mark with a stunning boundary off Maheesh Theekshana, in just 61 balls.
New Zealand was in a spot of bother with the scoreboard reading seven with two down when Phillips took the batting charge alongside captain Kane Williamson.
The New Zealand skipper couldn’t make an impact as he departed early courtesy of Kasun Rajitha’s outstanding delivery after which Phillips put his foot on the gas pedal.
With this, Phillips has now joined former New Zealand skipper and legend Brendon McCullum as the only two New Zealanders to notch up a hundred in the T20 World Cup. McCullum smashed a 58-ball 123 against Bangladesh in 2012.
Glenn Phillips’s belligerent knock was laced with 10 boundaries and four sixes as he pulled Kiwis back into the game against Sri Lanka. Thanks to his remarkable century, New Zealand finished the first innings with a challenging total of 167 for seven.
