Australia Women made a strong start to their Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign, beating New Zealand by 89 runs in the second match of the tournament. Ashleigh Gardner’s attacking hundred gave the Aussies a huge total, while Sophie Devine’s brave century for New Zealand went in vain.
Gardner Sets up Australia’s big total
Batting first, Australia lost Alyssa Healy early, but Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry steadied things before both fell in quick time. At 108 for 3, the innings was in trouble, but Gardner took control.
She batted fearlessly, mixing power with smart shots, and brought up her century in only 83 balls. She was dismissed for 115 in the 47th over, but by then Australia had already crossed 300. With useful runs from the middle and lower order, they ended on 326.
For New Zealand, Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu picked three wickets each, while Bree Illing and Amelia Kerr claimed two each.
Devine fights, but collapse ends New Zealand’s hopes
Chasing 327, New Zealand had a nightmare start, losing both openers without a run on the board. Captain Sophie Devine stood tall and launched a counterattack. She struck 112 from 112 balls, keeping her side in the hunt with stands alongside Amelia Kerr and Brooke Halliday.
But the rest of the batting fell apart. After Devine’s dismissal in the 43rd over, Annabel Sutherland ripped through the lower order with three wickets in a single over. New Zealand crashed from 235 for 7 to 237 all out, handing Australia a comfortable win.
Sutherland and Sophie Molineux took three wickets each, while Alana King chipped in with two.
