Why KKR Aren’t Replacing Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana Yet in IPL 2026 Squad

Harshit Rana ruled out of IPL 2026 with knee injury as KKR back Umran Malik and other Indian pacers to step up.

Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered a major setback before IPL 2026, with fast bowler Harshit Rana ruled out of the entire season due to a serious knee injury.

Rana will undergo surgery and miss the tournament, leaving a big gap in KKR’s pace attack ahead of the new campaign.

The young pacer had become a key figure for the franchise over the last two seasons. He picked up 19 wickets in IPL 2024 and followed it with 15 wickets in IPL 2025, often leading the bowling at the death.

KKR had expected Rana to once again lead the Indian pace unit this year. His absence now puts extra pressure on the rest of the bowling group.

The situation is made more uncertain by the fitness of Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan quick, one of KKR’s most expensive signings, is still undergoing rehabilitation in Sri Lanka.

Pathirana remains doubtful for the early matches of the season, which could leave the team short of experience in the fast-bowling department at the start.

Despite the setbacks, KKR are not planning to sign a replacement pacer for Rana. The franchise believes its current pool of Indian quicks can step up and handle the responsibility.

Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi, Vaibhav Arora and Akash Deep are expected to share the workload. Team management sees this as a chance for these bowlers to prove themselves on a big stage.

So far, the only change to the squad has been the addition of Blessing Muzarabani. The Zimbabwe fast bowler has come in as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman.

KKR are likely to continue with the rest of their squad as it is, even with Rana unavailable and Pathirana not fully fit.

The team, led by Ajinkya Rahane this season, still believes it has the depth to compete for the title.

KKR will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 28, hoping their backup pacers can grab the opportunity and deliver.
