Why Dasun Shanaka Was Given Not Out in Super Over Match Versus India in Asia Cup?

The Asia Cup 2025 dead rubber between India and Sri Lanka turned into one of the most dramatic games of the tournament. Both teams scored 202 runs, forcing a Super Over. Sri Lanka managed only two runs and lost both wickets, but the dismissal of Dasun Shanaka created huge confusion.

In the Super Over, Arshdeep Singh bowled a yorker outside off that moved away. Shanaka missed the ball while trying to dig it out. Arshdeep appealed for a caught behind and umpire Gazi Sohel gave it out.

Meanwhile, Sanju Samson collected the ball and hit the stumps directly with an under-arm throw as Shanaka bizarrely tried to run.

The drama began when UltraEdge showed a clear gap between bat and ball. The caught-behind was overturned on review. However, the run-out could not stand. Since the umpire had already given Shanaka out caught behind, the ball was declared dead the moment the decision was made.

According to the rules, once a batter is ruled out by the umpire, the ball is dead immediately. Even if the decision is later overturned, the subsequent events, including a run-out, do not count.

This meant Shanaka escaped the run-out, even though he was short of his crease when Samson’s throw hit the stumps. The Indian players looked confused, but umpire Gazi Sohel explained that the first decision stood until reviewed, making the ball dead.

If Arshdeep had not appealed for caught behind, Shanaka would have been out run-out, and Sri Lanka’s Super Over would have ended instantly with both batters stranded mid-pitch.
