“We Don’t Have to Shake Hands” – India’s Stance Explained by Ex-Indian Cricketer
Amit Mishra defends India after Asia Cup 2025 handshake snub, telling Pakistan captain Salman Agha: “Do you want us to be friends with you?”
The handshake controversy from the Asia Cup 2025 final is far from over. Pakistan captain Salman Agha again criticised India after the tournament, claiming their refusal to shake hands was disrespectful to his team and the game.
“What India has done in this tournament is extremely disappointing. They’re not just disrespecting us by refusing to shake hands, they’re disrespecting the game of cricket,” Agha said in a post-final press conference.
Former India spinner Amit Mishra, however, defended India’s stance, saying there is no rule that players must shake hands. He emphasised that cricket is about playing the game, not forming friendships.
“Is there any rule that says we must shake hands? We play cricket, we don’t need to be friends, and we don’t have to shake hands if we don’t want to. We’ve played three matches and won all three. After that, what more do you want? Do you want us to be friends with you? It’s our choice, and we won’t do it,” Mishra told ANI.
Mishra’s comments reflect the mindset of the Indian team after a clean sweep over Pakistan in the tournament. While sportsmanship is valued, the team believes their performance on the field speaks louder than formal gestures off it.
