Virat Kohli said he was “absolutely gutted” after RCB’s victory parade in Bengaluru turned tragic, leaving 11 people dead and over 30 injured.
What was meant to be a proud moment for Bengaluru turned into a heartbreaking tragedy. On the day when Royal Challengers Bengaluru were supposed to celebrate their maiden IPL trophy with the fans, a stampede broke out near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, resulting in 11 deaths and injuries to over 30 people.
Kohli Expresses Grief Over Bengaluru Tragedy
RCB’s star batter Virat Kohli, who played a crucial role in helping the team lift their first IPL title, expressed his shock and sorrow on social media.
“At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted,” wrote Kohli, reacting to the horrifying incident.
The open-bus parade was initially cancelled due to traffic concerns but was later allowed. The sudden rescheduling caused heavy crowds to gather, with thousands of fans lining up on the streets to see their heroes. Unfortunately, poor crowd control and lack of preparation led to the disaster outside the stadium.
RCB and Cricket Fraternity Respond
RCB released a statement expressing deep sadness over the incident. The team said the safety and well-being of fans was their top priority and extended their heartfelt condolences to the affected families. They also mentioned that the event was quickly modified in consultation with local authorities once the situation came to light.
Former RCB star AB de Villiers also shared his support and sympathy. “My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the tragic events at the Chinnaswamy stadium today,” he posted.
KSCA and BCCI Speak Out
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) announced a compensation of Rs 5 Lakh for the families of those who lost their lives. Meanwhile, the BCCI stated that they were not informed about the event in advance. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stressed the need for better planning and security during such public celebrations.
