Sourav Ganguly Open to Coaching Team India, Weighs In on Gambhir’s Rise
Sourav Ganguly open to coaching Team India, praises Gambhir’s growth and calls England series a key test.

Sourav Ganguly has said he is open to coaching the Indian national cricket team if the opportunity comes his way. Speaking in an interview with PTI, the former India captain shared that he never had the time earlier due to his commitments in cricket administration.
“I’ve taken on various roles over the years. After my playing career, I became the president of CAB, and then the BCCI president. I never really had the time, but who knows what the future holds. I’m still just 50, and I’m open to whatever comes my way. Let’s see where it goes,” Ganguly said.
Ganguly is currently mentoring both the men’s and women’s teams of Delhi Capitals in the IPL and WPL. He’s also served as a strong voice in Indian cricket through his administrative roles.
Comments on Gambhir’s Coaching Journey
Ganguly also spoke about Gautam Gambhir, India’s current head coach, and said the former opener’s coaching journey has had its share of ups and downs.
“He’s been doing well. He had a slow start, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but his performance as a coach improved in the Champions Trophy. The series against England will be crucial for him,” Ganguly said.
India’s Test losses earlier in the year had raised questions about Gambhir’s tactics, but the Champions Trophy 2025 win helped ease some pressure. Ganguly believes the ongoing series against England will give a clearer picture of Gambhir’s growth as a coach.
“I haven’t had the chance to work closely with him, so I can’t comment on his strategy. But I’ve always seen him as very passionate. We played together, and he was a great guy,” he said.
“I see him now, and he’s very passionate and straightforward. He’s open about everything whether it’s people, the team, or players. From the outside, it’s clear he’s someone who speaks his mind. What you see is what you get. I wish him all the best, but like everyone else, he will continue to learn and grow,” Ganguly added.
Ganguly’s interest in coaching has sparked fresh excitement, especially as India moves into a new phase after the retirement of senior players.
