Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out Of ODI Series With Shoulder Injury; Likely to Miss IPL 2021 First Half Too
The incident happened in the eighth over of the England innings when Shreyas Iyer dived on a drive hit by Jonny Bairstow off pacer Shardul Thakur.
Team India suffered a major blow as their batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs of the three-match series against England after dislocating his shoulder while fielding in the first ODI.
Iyer dived to save a boundary in the 8th over bowled by Shardul Thakur and started writhing in pain immediately as he clutched his left shoulder. The Indian team physiotherapist took the 26-year-old off the field.
He was later sent for scans which revealed that he has suffered a labrum tear on his left shoulder. Iyer didn’t take any further part in the match which India won by 66 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Iyer’s injury also means that he will miss the first few weeks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that starts on April 9.The right-handed batsman leads Delhi Capitals in the IPL and helped the team make the final of IPL 2020 where they finished runners-up. Iyer had been in good form with the bat in the ongoing limited-overs leg of England’s 2021 tour.
Notably, India have options in form of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill to replace Iyer for the remaining two ODIs against England. However, it is yet to be seen that who will get the chance to feature in 2nd ODI, that is scheduled to be played on March 26 in Pune.
While Iyer is set to be out of action for a while, Rohit Sharma, who was hit on the elbow while batting, is understood to be ready to take the field for the second ODI on Friday.
