Shreyas Iyer Awaits Key Scan That Will Shape His Recovery Plan – Reports
Shreyas Iyer awaits a key mid December scan that will decide his rehab plan after a serious rib and spleen injury.
Shreyas Iyer is waiting for a key medical scan in mid December, a test that will decide when he can begin full rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The Indian batter has been out of action since he suffered a severe impact injury to his left lower rib during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.
Doctors in Sydney treated him for a spleen laceration and internal bleeding, which made the injury far more serious than a normal blow to the ribs. He was discharged in late October and has shown steady progress since then. Even so, he still needs specialist clearance before he can return to heavy cricket training.
At the moment, Iyer has been allowed only basic movements and light isometric exercises. He has not been cleared for batting, fielding or running drills. His comeback now depends on an ultrasound scan that will show whether the internal healing is complete.
Rehab Plan Hinges on Specialist Review
The next step will come after Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala reviews the scan and designs a detailed rehab plan for Iyer. This will decide how quickly he can move to cricket specific work and when he can rejoin team training.
In his absence, India have used Ruturaj Gaikwad at No. 4. He grabbed the chance with a maiden ODI century and has given the team a handy option while Iyer recovers.
The coaching staff remains hopeful. Morné Morkel said in Ranchi, “Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. We are looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad. The good thing is that they are healthy and they are starting their preparation on their way back into the team.”
