In the latest turn of events, India skipper Rohit Sharma, who tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the one-off Test against England ruled out of the all-important clash and senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named the skipper of the team for the Edgbaston Test.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed about the development via Twitter. “Jasprit Bumrah to lead Team India in the fifth Test Match against England,” BCCI captioned on Twitter.

Following his appointment as the captain of India for the Edgbaston Test, Bumrah will also become the first pacer since Kapil Dev to captain an Indian unit in the longest format.

Rohit Sharma’s absence will be a massive blow for team India as he is the leading run-scorer for the visitors in the series at the moment having amassed 368 runs at an average of 52.57. KL Rahul, the second-leading run-getter for India was already ruled out of the series due to injury.

India currently lead the five-match series 2-1 and have a chance to win their first Test series in England since 2007 and the absence of their top pair will certainly be a massive setback for them.
