‘Rohit Sharma Is an Undeserving Captain, Jasprit Bumrah Should Lead India in T20 World Cup 2024’ – Ex-KKR Director
Joy Bhattacharjya believes that Rohit Sharma do not deserve to lead Team India in World Cup 2024
Former Kolkata Knight Riders director Joy Bhattacharjya has made bold remarks about the Indian captain Rohit Sharma, stating that he is undeserving to lead Team India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Bhattacharjya dissected the performance of Rohit Sharma in the ongoing IPL 2024, where he is playing purely as a batsman after relinquishing the captaincy to Hardik Pandya.
The cricket expert believes that other openers in the ongoing IPL 2024, like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, have outperformed Rohit Sharma in opening the innings.
“The decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as India’s captain for the T20 World Cup may have hampered the team. At this point, Sharma is not the ideal choice to lead the team in the T20I format,” he said on Cricbuzz.
Bhattacharjya also stated that it would be unfortunate for the other openers to miss out on the chance of representing Team India at the World Cup stage just because Rohit Sharma is the captain and is assured a spot in the playing 11.
Rohit Sharma has scored 303 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 162 and an average of 42. He has already smashed an unbeaten century in the tournament, which came against the Chennai Super Kings at his home ground, the Wankhede Stadium.
However, other opening options like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and even Abhishek Sharma, who is not currently considered for the opening slot due to the abundance of options, have made a bigger impact with the bat compared to Rohit.
“I have the utmost respect for Rohit Sharma and I think he is an amazing cricketer. However, he is currently out of batting form. Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill are in better form right now and are strong contenders for the opening positions.”
“However, since Rohit Sharma is the captain, he will open, meaning one of those in-form players will have to bat lower down the order,” he added.
Jasprit Bumrah Would Be A Better Choice: Joy Bhattacharjya
Furthermore, the cricket expert also stated that in this case, the pace spearhead of Team India, Jasprit Bumrah, could have been a better option to lead the team.
“I would choose Jasprit Bumrah over Rohit Sharma as captain because Bumrah’s skill as a bowler makes him a vital member of the team.”
Captain Rohit Sharma is likely to meet the chief selector Ajit Agarkar on April 30 to pick the 15-member squad for Team India for the upcoming biennial tournament, which is set to be co-hosted by the USA and West Indies.
