‘Rohit and Kohli Were Crying’ – R Ashwin Recalls India’s World Cup 2023 Loss

India failed to end their ICC World Cup trophy drought, losing to Australia by six wickets in World Cup 2023.

R Ashwin, India’s experienced off-spinner, revisited the painful memory of the ODI World Cup 2023 final defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad on Nov 19, and also revealed how it broke his heart to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in tears.

India had a remarkable journey in the World Cup 2023, winning in all nine group stage matches. However, the dream shattered in the final against Australia, where they succumbed to a six-wicket loss after a promising 70-run win over New Zealand in the first semifinal.

Speaking to S Badrinath on his YouTube channel, here’s Ashwin stated:

“Yes, we felt the pain. Rohit and Virat were crying. Seeing that it felt bad. Anyways, not meant to be. This team was an experienced team. Everybody knew what to do. And then, it was professional. Everybody knew their routines, warm-ups. I think two natural leaders gave the team the space to do these two and created a vibe.”

Many have been suggesting that the ODI World Cup 2023 could be the swan song for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in representing India, considering their age, making the prospect of their presence in the 2027 World Cup quite unlikely.
