Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium dropped from Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 over safety fears after IPL stampede tragedy, casting doubt over RCB’s IPL 2026 home games.
In a stunning blow to Bengaluru’s cricketing pride, the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been dropped as a venue for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
The tournament, starting on September 30, will now likely see Thiruvananthapuram step in to replace Bengaluru, according to a report by Cricbuzz.
This comes after weeks of speculation, with Bengaluru initially set to host some of the tournament’s biggest fixtures, including the opening match, a semi-final, and high-profile group stage clashes like India vs Sri Lanka, England vs South Africa, and India vs Bangladesh.
But the final call, reportedly taken on August 11, has confirmed that no World Cup matches will be played at Chinnaswamy.
Safety Concerns After IPL 2025 Stampede
The Karnataka government’s refusal to green-light the venue stems from the Justice Cunha committee report, which investigated the tragic stampede that followed Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic IPL 2025 title win. The celebrations spiraled into chaos, leaving 11 dead and many injured.
The committee’s findings were damning, citing Chinnaswamy’s “design and structure” as fundamentally unsafe for large gatherings. The report warned that hosting mass events there posed an “unacceptable risk” to public safety.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) reportedly suggested hosting matches without spectators to bypass crowd safety concerns, but the government stood firm. Similar concerns had earlier forced Maharaja Trophy fixtures to be shifted from Bengaluru to Mysuru.
RCB’s Home Advantage Under Threat
The fallout could extend well beyond the Women’s World Cup. With Chinnaswamy being Karnataka’s only international-standard cricket stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru now face the real possibility of losing their home turf for IPL 2026.
If safety clearance isn’t granted in time, the franchise may be forced to play “home” matches in another city, a crushing blow to the thousands of fans who have turned the stadium into one of the loudest and most intimidating venues in world cricket.
