RCB Star Becomes England’s Youngest Captain in History

Jacob Bethell, 21, will captain England’s T20 side vs Ireland, breaking a 136-year-old record for youngest men’s skipper.

Jacob Bethell will make history next month when he leads England in a T20 series against Ireland at just 21 years old. The all-rounder will break a record that has stood since 1889.

The previous youngest England men’s captain was Monty Bowden, who was 23 when he took charge in a Test match in South Africa after skipper Aubrey Smith fell ill. That milestone has stood for 136 years.

Bethell will captain England in three T20s in Dublin starting September 17. With senior names missing, including regular white-ball leader Harry Brook who will be busy against South Africa earlier in September, the opportunity has opened up for the youngster.

“Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities since joining the England squads. This series will help him further develop those skills on the international stage,” England selector Luke Wright said.

It’s another big step in a fast-moving career for Bethell, who only made his debut for England in all three formats last year. Now, he will take on the challenge of leading his country before most players even dream of it.
