Not Shreyas Iyer but Gill Will Replace Rohit Sharma As ODI Captain: BCCI Issues Clarification
India’s ODI captaincy is under scrutiny as Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill emerge as contenders to succeed Rohit Sharma.
The Indian cricket team is in a period of transition, with veterans stepping aside and fresh talent taking charge. Leadership decisions, especially for the ODI team, are now under the microscope as rumors swirl around Rohit Sharma’s possible retirement.
Shreyas Iyer has been touted as a strong candidate for the ODI captaincy after leading two different IPL franchises to consecutive finals. His experience, leadership skills, and ability to inspire make him a fan favourite to succeed Rohit.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed reports of any discussions to replace Rohit. “That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” he told Hindustan Times, putting speculation to rest, for now.
While Iyer has proven himself in white-ball cricket, Shubman Gill may have the edge. Gill, India’s premier ODI opener and current Test captain, has been fast-tracked into leadership roles in both IPL and international cricket. Officials suggest he is the natural choice to eventually take over the ODI captaincy.
“He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found success, and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes,” a source told Hindustan Times.
At 24, Gill is almost five years younger than Iyer, giving India the chance to groom a long-term leader. His IPL success and a strong debut series in England further strengthen his case. While Iyer has experience and pedigree as a captain, the board appears keen on building for the future with Gill.
