“No One Cares” – Sunil Gavaskar Slams Pakistan Captain for Skipping Post-Match Interview

Sunil Gavaskar hits out at Pakistan captain Salman Agha for skipping Asia Cup post-match talk after handshake row.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha for walking away from the post-match presentation after India’s win in the Asia Cup 2025 clash in Dubai.

The game ended with Suryakumar Yadav’s men cruising past Pakistan by seven wickets, but the headlines were dominated by the refusal of Indian players to shake hands with their rivals.

After the loss, Agha and coach Mike Hesson reportedly walked towards the Indian dressing room for handshakes, only to find the door closed on them.

Upset by the gesture, Agha skipped the presentation ceremony hosted by former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar.

Gavaskar, however, brushed it off, saying Agha’s absence hardly mattered. “I don’t think it made much difference anyway. People mainly wanted to hear what the winning captain had to say, not excuses from the other side,” he told India Today.

The Indian team, led by Suryakumar, dedicated their win to the Indian Armed Forces and paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Gavaskar supported the move, saying sports and politics often overlap. “Sports and politics have never been separate. I wouldn’t criticise someone for taking that stance,” he said.

No Rule for Compulsory Handshakes

With Pakistan lodging a formal complaint to the ICC and demanding the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft, the controversy has spiraled. The PCB has even threatened to withdraw from the tournament if their demands are ignored.

But Gavaskar backed the Indian players, pointing out that no rule forces handshakes. “I don’t know exactly what happened, but if an individual decides not to shake hands, they are perfectly within their rights to do so,” he said.

He added that on-field tensions often go beyond the game.

“There are times when people abuse you and say things that aren’t acceptable. If someone has been calling you names, asking that you go and shake hands with them is too much to expect.”
