‘Maxwell Doesn’t Deserve to Play Test Cricket’ – Ricky Ponting
Glenn Maxwell hasn’t been picked in the Australia Test squad against Pakistan.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell isn’t suitable to play Test cricket for the nation. Maxwell, who was part of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup winning squad wasn’t picked for the Test series against Pakistan.
Speaking exclusively to 7news.com.au, Ponting justified Maxwell’s exclusion from the Australia Test side, citing his modest first-class run record of 339 runs in seven matches, maintaining an average of 26.08 and a highest score of 104.
Here’s what Ricky Ponting said:
“No one deserves a chance unless you’ve got a truckload of first-class runs behind you. I’m a no, he doesn’t deserve it. But if he gets a chance to go back and make some first-class runs then he can force his way back in.”
Meanwhile, Maxwell remains hopeful about his Test career. In an interview with SEN, he opened up on the challenge of grabbing a spot in the Australian Test side, emphasising their status as World Test champions. Here’s what Maxwell had told SEN:
“I’m quite understanding of the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. There are not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home. But I know that when it comes to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage.”
