Match-Fixing Scandal: ICC Bans Former Cricketer for 5 Years
Ex-Sri Lankan cricketer Saliya Saman has been banned for five years by the ICC for match-fixing in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
Former Sri Lankan domestic cricketer Saliya Saman has been handed a five-year ban from all forms of cricket after being found guilty of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code.
The ICC announced that the 39-year-old’s suspension is backdated to 13 September 2023, when he was provisionally suspended. This means he has already served two years of the ban.
Saman, who played over 100 first-class matches and 77 List A games, was among eight people charged in September 2023 for offences linked to the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 League.
The ICC and the event’s anti-corruption officials said he was involved in attempts to corrupt matches during the tournament.
The tribunal found Saman guilty on three counts, attempting to fix matches, offering rewards to influence other players, and encouraging participants to break the Code.
These breaches are covered under Articles 2.1.1, 2.1.3, and 2.1.4 of the ECB’s Anti-Corruption Code.
With the verdict, Saman will remain banned from all cricket until September 2028.
