Massive Rift at CSK? R Ashwin Requests Franchise to Release Him Ahead of IPL 2026
Ravichandran Ashwin has reportedly asked Chennai Super Kings to release him ahead of IPL 2026.
R Ashwin may be headed for a fresh chapter in his IPL journey. The senior India off-spinner has reportedly requested Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to release him ahead of the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League.
While an official confirmation is still awaited, multiple developments suggest the split is increasingly likely.
According to reports, Ashwin has already informed the CSK management of his decision. Though the exact reasons remain unclear, the veteran spinner is believed to have made up his mind.
It is not known whether this decision was influenced by any signals regarding CSK’s future plans, but the timing is notable, given a series of high-level meetings within the franchise in Chennai recently, involving senior officials and players like MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Ashwin is also expected to step down from his role as the Director of Operations at the CSK Academy, a position he has held since last year. If he joins another franchise, continuing in that administrative role could raise concerns of conflict of interest, something Ashwin is reportedly eager to avoid.
A seasoned IPL campaigner, Ashwin has featured in 221 matches, bagging 187 wickets at an economy of 7.29 and scoring 833 runs at a strike rate of 118.
He rejoined CSK in the 2025 season for INR 9.75 crore, nine years after he last played for them in 2015. In the intervening years, he represented Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals.
The development comes just a day after reports surfaced of Sanju Samson also requesting a release from Rajasthan Royals.
