Jonathon Trott to Step Down as Afghanistan Head Coach After 2026 T20 World Cup

Afghanistan will have a new head coach after the 2026 T20 World Cup, as the board has decided to part ways with Jonathon Trott following his successful stint with the national team.

Trott, who took over in 2022, will remain with the side till the global event in India and Sri Lanka, scheduled for February 2026.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed the move, calling it part of a planned transition aimed at the team’s long-term growth.

During Trott’s time, Afghanistan reached new heights in international cricket. The team’s biggest moment came at the 2024 T20 World Cup, when they stormed into the semi-finals for the first time in their history.

Under him, Afghanistan also recorded wins over several top-ranked sides, marking their rise as a competitive global team.

In a statement, Trott said it had been a privilege to work with Afghanistan and praised the players for their hunger and attitude.

“It has been a special journey with this team. Their passion and belief have inspired me, and I’ll always remain a supporter of Afghan cricket,” he said.

The board, on its part, described the decision as a natural phase of evolution rather than a reaction to results.

“Just as teams evolve, so do their leadership needs. No international side remains under a single coach forever,” the ACB said.

Trott, who played 52 Tests and 68 ODIs for England before moving into coaching, leaves behind a team that has shown strong signs of consistency.

Afghanistan recently completed a 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe, continuing their impressive run.

With the T20 World Cup less than four months away, the board will soon begin the search for a new head coach to take over after Trott’s departure.
