IPL 2023: Three Players Who Can Replace Kyle Jamieson in Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
After Kyle Jamieson was ruled out of IPL 2023, here are the potential replacement in the squad.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a huge blow ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as their tall Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson ruled out of the tournament for the entire season.
Jamieson, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023 auction at his base price of INR 1 crore, is slated to undergo surgery for his injured back and is expected to be out of action for at least four months.
After a forgettable season in the last edition of the IPL, where they finished second from bottom on the points table, the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings will aim to make a strong comeback this year.
As they gear up for the new season, let’s take a look at the potential replacements for Kyle Jamieson in their squad.
1. Gerald Coetzee
The emergence of the young pace sensation from South Africa has been making waves in the cricketing world, especially among Chennai Super Kings’ fans who saw him in action for their sister franchise Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 league.
Boasting a bowling action similar to Dale Steyn, Coetzee was Joburg Super Kings’ top wicket-taker in the SA20, with an impressive tally of 17 wickets in just nine matches, at an average of 13 and an economy rate of 8.07.
Coetzee may have been overlooked in the IPL 2023 auction, despite setting his base price at INR 20 lakh, but with Kyle Jamieson out for the entire season, the young pacer now has a chance to make his mark for Chennai Super Kings.
2. Dushmantha Chameera
The Sri Lankan pacer had an excellent run with Lucknow Super Giants in the previous year, claiming nine wickets in 12 matches with an average of 42.67 and an economy rate of 8.73.
While his numbers may not fully reflect his effectiveness with the new ball and in the death overs, he was a standout performer for Lucknow Super Giants and their go-to option for death bowling.
His lack of availability due to injuries after the 2022 IPL season was one of the reasons why he went unsold in the 2023 auction. However, he is now fully recovered and ready to perform, making him a potential replacement for Jamieson for CSK this year.
3. Dasun Shanaka
With his consistent performances in T20s, the Sri Lankan captain has become a valuable asset for his team. He showed his mettle in Sri Lanka’s recent tour of India, emerging as the highest run-getter for his team.
With his ability to take wickets early and thriving in the death overs, Shanaka is a highly valuable player. On top of that, he is an exceptional batter, known for his clean hitting and ability to win games on his own.
With 178 T20 matches under his belt and an impressive strike rate of 142.45, this 31-year-old batsman is a proven performer in the shortest format of the game, which makes him a great prospect to look for in the absence of Kyle Jamieson.
