IPL 2021: Rajasthan Royals Appoint Kumar Sangakkara as Director of Cricket
IPL 2021: Kumar Sangakkara has been appointed as the Director of Cricket by Rajasthan Royals, the team announced in a tweet on Sunday.
Sri Lankan batting great Kumar Sangakkara on Sunday was appointed as the new director of cricket at Rajasthan Royals, the Rajasthan-based franchise confirmed the news.
Sangakkara, the current President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), “will be responsible for overseeing the entire cricketing ecosystem of the Royals franchise, including coaching structure, auction plans and team strategy, talent discovery and development, as well as the development of the Royals Academy in Nagpur.”
The Rajasthan-based franchise took to Twitter to share this news, hailing the former Sri Lanka cricketer as “legendary”. “Adding some legendary to the #RoyalsFamily. #WelcomeSanga | #HallaBol | @KumarSanga2,” read the caption on the tweet by Rajasthan.
The 43-year-old expressed his excitement in response to the announcement, stating that he looked forward to working with the franchise.
“To oversee the cricket strategy of a franchise in the leading cricket competition in the world, as well as building the development programs and cricketing infrastructure that will provide the future foundation of the IPL team’s on-field success, is an opportunity that really motivated me,” Sangakarra was quoted as saying in a media release.
“I have really enjoyed speaking to the leadership group over the recent weeks and can’t wait to get going,” Sanga said.
He also took to Twitter to share his excitement. “Thrilled to be on board and look forward to working with everyone. #HallaBol #RoyalsFamily,” read the reaction from the former Sri Lanka captain.
Sangakkara has had a good IPL experience as well, having played the tournament for six years – for the Kings XI Punjab, the Deccan Chargers and the Sunrisers Hyderabad, whom he captained – as well as going around the T20-leagues block with stints in Australia’s Big Bash, the Caribbean Premier League, the Pakistan Super League, the Bangladesh Premier League and England’s T20 Blast.
