India Makes Last-Minute Change to World Cup 2023 Squad, Star All-Rounder Ruled Out of Tournament
Axar Patel ruled out of the World Cup 2023 due to injury
In a late change to their ICC World Cup 2023 squad, India welcomed back off-spinner R Ashwin, who replaced the injured Axar Patel in the 15-man squad.
Ashwin joined the team in Guwahati on Thursday, September 29, just in time for their opening warm-up match against defending champions England on September 30.
Ashwin was added to the India squad for the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, featuring in the opening two matches held in Mohali and Indore.
It was in the second ODI that the off-spinner showcased his bowling prowess, ending up with brilliant figures of 3 for 41 in seven overs, which played a key role in India’s thumping 99-run victory.
Ashwin’s no stranger to the ODI World Cup scene, having played it twice for India. He was part of the squad that won the 2011 edition down in the subcontinent. He missed out from playing in the 2019 ODI World Cup in England, after India opted to bank on the wrist spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav, along with Ravindra Jadeja.
