Shubman Gill scores career-best 147 in 1st Test vs England, nears Kohli’s England record in dominant India innings

Shubman Gill continued his dream run in Test cricket by registering his highest-ever individual score in the format during Day 2 of the opening Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds.
Coming in to bat at number four, Gill played a responsible and composed innings. He built two vital partnerships first with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and then with Rishabh Pant to put India in a strong position.
He eventually got out for 147, missing his maiden 150 by just three runs. This knock surpassed his previous best of 128, scored against Australia in Ahmedabad in 2023.

Close To Breaking Kohli’s England Captaincy Record
Gill narrowly missed overtaking Virat Kohli’s record of 149, the second-highest Test score by an Indian captain in England. With his 147, Gill now sits fourth on that elite list. Azharuddin (179), Kohli (149), and Pataudi (148) still remain ahead, while Sourav Ganguly’s 128 drops to fifth.
India’s Dominant Batting Display at Headingley
India, after being sent in to bat, made the most of a good pitch. Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone with a classy hundred, and Gill followed it up with a captain’s knock.
Rishabh Pant then added to the joy by smashing his seventh Test century and going past MS Dhoni’s record of most hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests.
While Karun Nair failed to make an impact on his return, Pant and Ravindra Jadeja ensured India crossed the 450-run mark by the end of the second session on Day 2.
