IND vs ENG: Ball Tracking Controversy? Sunil Gavaskar Questions DRS After Root Survives Close LBW

Gavaskar slams DRS after Joe Root survives LBW scare on Day 4 of Lord’s Test; India need 135 runs to win

The Lord’s Test has turned into a thrilling contest. After three slow-paced days, Day 3 ended with high drama. Since then, the heat has only gone up, on and off the field.

Joe Root Survives a Close LBW Shout

One of the biggest talking points on Day 4 was a tight LBW call involving Joe Root. In the 38th over, Mohammed Siraj bowled a full delivery that struck Root’s pad. It looked plumb live. India went up in appeal, but the umpire gave it not out.

Siraj was sure, and India took the review. Replays suggested the ball would go on to hit the stumps.

But when ball tracking was shown, the delivery was only clipping the leg stump. Because of “umpire’s call,” the on-field decision stood, and Root survived.

Gavaskar Questions the Technology

The moment ball-tracking appeared on the screen, Sunil Gavaskar, who was on-air, couldn’t hide his frustration. He felt there was no way the ball would miss leg stump given the line and angle.

“The impact was between off and middle stump, and you’re saying it will only clip leg stump? No way that ball moves so much,” Gavaskar said.

His comments reignited the old debate over the accuracy of the DRS ball-tracking system. Many fans and former cricketers also took to social media to echo his views.

Root Fails to Capitalise, India Keep Hopes Alive

Even though Root survived the LBW, he couldn’t make it count. He was dismissed for 40 a few overs later. England then collapsed and could only set a target of 193 runs for India.

By stumps, India had lost four wickets including nightwatchman Akash Deep, and still need 135 runs to win on Day 5 with six wickets in hand.

It’s all set up for a grandstand finish at Lord’s.
