Harmanpreet Kaur Creates History as India Seal T20 Series Win Over Sri Lanka
Harmanpreet Kaur becomes the most successful women’s T20I captain as India beat Sri Lanka in Trivandrum to seal the series 3-0.
Harmanpreet Kaur created history on Thursday by becoming the most successful captain in women’s T20Is. She went past Meg Lanning’s record of 76 wins after India sealed the series against Sri Lanka in Trivandrum.
The landmark 77th win came in Harmanpreet’s 130th match as captain, underlining her long run at the top. England’s Heather Knight is next on the list with 72 wins, followed by former Australia captain Charlotte Edwards with 68.
India wrapped up the T20I series in style, beating Sri Lanka by eight wickets to take an unassailable 3-0 lead. It was another one-sided contest where India dominated with both ball and bat from the start.
Sri Lanka were held to 112 for 7 after being put in to bat. Renuka Singh led the attack with three wickets, while Deepti Sharma bowled a tight spell that choked the scoring in the middle overs.
Deepti’s performance also pushed her to the top of the all-time women’s T20I wicket-takers list, where she now sits joint first. Sri Lanka tried to fight back late through Kavisha Dilhari, but the total was never enough.
The chase was made simple by Shafali Verma, who smashed an unbeaten 79 off just 42 balls. She attacked from the start and never let the pressure build, finishing the match with plenty of balls to spare.
After the win, Harmanpreet said the team has been clear about raising its standards after the World Cup. “It has been a great series for all of us,” she said. “We spoke about being more aggressive in T20s because the T20 World Cup is coming.”
She also stressed the importance of bowling in the shortest format. “Today, we are in this position because of our bowlers. Credit goes to our bowling lineup for the way they bowled in this series,” Harmanpreet added.
