Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in their debut season, defeating the inaugural season champions Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 29).
They were the least favourite franchise to lift the trophy after the mega auction but butchering all pre-tournament predictions, they surprised everyone by lifting the Indian Premier League title in a dream maiden season.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, Rajasthan Royals were restricted to 130 for nine by the Gujarat bowlers at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium.
The highest run-scorer of the tournament, Jos Buttler, got out to GT skipper Hardik Pandya after making 39 off 35 balls. Hardik bowled brilliantly to finish with figures of 3/17 in his four overs, while Rashid Khan too had an excellent outing, taking 1/18 in his full quota of overs.
Chasing the target, Gujarat Titans lost the wickets of Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade in the powerplay itself as the former was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna and Wade was dismissed by Trent Boult. At the end of the powerplay, Gujarat Titans were at 31-2.
GT skipper Hardik Pandya and opener Shubman Gill added 63 runs in 53 balls before the former was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the 14th over for 34.
