Gautam Gambhir Drops Hard-Hitting Message, Shuts Down All World Cup 2027 Squad Talks with Blunt Remark
Gambhir urges India to stay focused on present after 2-1 ODI series win, praising Gaikwad and Jaiswal for key centuries.
India wrapped up the ODI series against South Africa with a strong 2-1 finish, and head coach Gautam Gambhir used the post match press conference in Visakhapatnam to send a clear message. He said it is too early to talk about the 2027 ODI World Cup and that the team must focus on what is in front of them.
He said, “Look, first we have got to realise that ODI World Cup is two years away from now. The most important thing is to stay in the present.”
India had just chased 271 in 39.5 overs, winning the decider by nine wickets.
He also spoke about the importance of youngsters taking their chances when senior players like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are out injured. He said that opportunities must be earned and then used well.
Gambhir praised Ruturaj Gaikwad for his century under pressure in the second ODI. India were 40 for 2 and the team needed someone to settle the innings. Gaikwad, batting out of position, stepped up with a calm and solid hundred. Gambhir said the knock showed real quality.
He said, “Someone like Ruturaj Gaikwad, who batted out of position. He is a quality player, we all know. He actually grabbed that opportunity with both hands, getting a hundred in the second game, when we were under pressure.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal also earned praise after scoring his first ODI century. Gambhir said the youngster has already proved his skill in Test cricket and is now beginning to shape his white ball career. He believes both Jaiswal and Gaikwad can be long term players for India.
He said, “Hopefully, he has a massive future ahead, and so is the case with Ruturaj.”
Virat Kohli, who was Player of the Series, added crucial runs through the series, helping India keep control in key moments. His experience blended well with the hunger of the younger batters.
India’s strong chase in Visakhapatnam showed a confident dressing room. Gambhir stressed that the team must continue to build on this momentum rather than think too far ahead.
