Fact Check: Is Rohit Sharma Being Removed as ODI Captain? Shubman Gill to Take Over?
Reports hint at Shubman Gill replacing Rohit Sharma as ODI captain, but BCCI has made no official decision yet.
Shubman Gill’s solid start as India’s Test captain has sparked new debate online, will he also take over the ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma?
A few media reports have claimed that the change is around the corner, especially with India’s next ODI series scheduled in October. But is it really happening?
What the reports say
A report by Sports Tak suggested that Gill is being considered as India’s long-term ODI captain and might even lead the side at the 2027 World Cup. It also hinted that Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs could be uncertain.
Other outlets claimed that Gill may be asked to lead India the next time they play ODIs, which will be a three-match series in Australia this October.
These rumours have since gone viral, with fans flooding social media to either welcome the change or show support for Rohit.
Why the buzz started
The speculation around Rohit’s captaincy actually began in December 2024, when he opted out of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
That match eventually turned out to be his last in red-ball cricket. While many expected him to continue as Test captain, the BCCI reportedly had other plans. Rohit soon retired from Tests and confirmed that he would still be available for ODIs.
He then led India at the 2025 Champions Trophy and had made his intentions clear—he wanted to continue till the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, especially after the heartbreak of losing the 2023 final at home.
Gill’s rise and the other contenders
Gill had already made a name for himself in ODIs before becoming a regular in the Test side. His leadership in the current England series has been praised for tactical maturity and calmness. That has naturally led to questions about whether he is next in line to lead across formats.
Shreyas Iyer is another name that keeps popping up in white-ball captaincy discussions. The middle-order batter is a settled figure in the ODI side and has shown strong leadership skills in the IPL.
What’s official?
As of now, nothing has been confirmed by the BCCI. Rohit Sharma remains India’s ODI captain. These reports are speculative, and no official statement has been made regarding a change in leadership.
Until India’s next ODI assignment begins in October, this remains just a rumour, not a reality.
