Atkinson becomes the third England quick to have his Ashes campaign cut short. Mark Wood was earlier ruled out with a knee injury, while Jofra Archer returned home due to a side strain.
In a tough series for England’s bowlers, Atkinson picked up six wickets from 73 overs. He averaged 47.33 and went at 3.89 runs per over, numbers that reflect both the workload and the pressure on an under-strength attack.
With Atkinson sidelined, Matthew Potts is expected to come in and could make his Ashes debut in Sydney. England’s pace options are thin, and the management is keen to manage workloads carefully.
