England Near Group Stage Exit After 36-Run Loss to Australia in T20 World Cup 2024
Australia now sits at the top of the Group B points table.
Australia registered a thumping 36-run victory over England in a high-octane T20 World Cup 2024 clash, putting England’s qualification chances in jeopardy.
Electing to bowl first, a decision they might regret, England witnessed a batting masterclass from the Australian batters.
The Men in Yellow piled up a mammoth total of 201 runs for the loss of just seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs – the first time a team has crossed the 200-run mark in this tournament.
Openers Travis Head (34 off 18) and David Warner (39 off 16) provided a brisk start, setting the tone for the innings.
Captain Mitchell Marsh (35 off 25) chipped in with a valuable knock, while cameos from Glenn Maxwell (28), Marcus Stoinis (30), and Tim David (11) propelled the score further.
A late flourish from Matthew Wade’s unbeaten 17 off just 10 balls ensured Australia finished strong.
Lacklustre Batting Display from England
England’s chase began brightly, with openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler stitching together a 73-run partnership.
However, the dismissal of both openers triggered a collapse, with none of the remaining batters able to build on the foundation laid.
Adam Zampa (2/28) and Pat Cummins (2/23) were the pick of the Australian bowlers, effectively stifling the English chase.
Josh Hazlewood also chipped in with a wicket (1/28) as England could only manage 165 runs for the loss of six wickets.
This loss, coupled with their washed-out opening match against Scotland (both teams shared a point), leaves England in a precarious position in the group stage.
On the other hand, Australia have secured their second consecutive victory and look well-placed to advance to the next round.
