Dewald Brevis, 22, smashed an unbeaten 125 in Darwin to become the youngest South African to score a T20I century

Darwin witnessed history on Monday as Dewald Brevis produced a once-in-a-generation T20I knock that left Australia shell-shocked.

The 22-year-old South African, long touted as the “next AB de Villiers,” proved he is here to write his own chapter, blasting an unbeaten 125 to break multiple records at the Marrara Cricket Ground.

Walking in with South Africa wobbling at 44 for 2, Brevis began cautiously, scoring just 14 off his first dozen balls. But what followed was a breathtaking display of power-hitting that turned the game on its head.

He tore into the Australian attack with fearless strokeplay, clobbering 9 boundaries and 8 towering sixes. By the time he reached his century in just 41 deliveries, the home crowd had been silenced.

Only David Miller has scored a faster T20I hundred for South Africa, 35 balls against Bangladesh in 2017. Brevis now sits second on that list, ahead of big names like Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis.

More significantly, at 22 years and 105 days, he became the youngest South African ever to reach the milestone, surpassing Richard Levi’s record.

The innings had its twist of fate. On 56, Brevis offered a chance to Glenn Maxwell, who spilled a straightforward catch. Australia paid dearly, the right-hander added another 69 runs without being dismissed, finishing with the highest score by any South African in T20I cricket.

His 125* is also the second-highest score ever by a non-opener in T20Is among full-member nations, just behind Sikandar Raza’s 133*. Even more impressively, no other visiting batter had ever scored a T20I century on Australian soil before Brevis.

For a player whose talent has often been compared to South Africa’s batting greats, this innings was more than just a statement, it was a warning to world cricket. Brevis isn’t the “next” anyone. He’s the first Dewald Brevis.
