Covid Positive Players Allowed to Play in T20 World Cup 2022

In what comes as a big relief to all the teams participating in the T20 World Cup 2022, the International Cricket Council (ICC) relaxed the Covid-19 related rules for the showpiece event. As per latest guidelines, the players who test Covid-19 positive during the marquee tournament will be allowed to feature in the matches.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), the world governing body for the sport confirmed that there will be no mandatory testing and no isolation period will be required if any player tests positive for Covid-19. The team’s doctor will make a final call on whether a player should play the match if they test positive for Covid-19. 

Notably, last year in the 2021 T20 World Cup, which was held in UAE, they followed the strict Covid-19 rules. However, during the women’s T20I final between India and Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Tahlia McGrath was allowed to play despite testing positive for Covid-19.

The Australian pacer Pat Cummins welcomed the move. During a media interaction on Sunday, on the eve of the defending champions’ final warm-up match against India on Monday, here’s what Australian Test captain said on the new ICC rule:

“It’s a totally different dynamic.”

“The team went out for dinner last night and we actually were chatting about it, (saying) ‘this is the first time we’ve done this for about three years’.

‘It’s great fun. It’s one of the main things we all love about playing for your country – you get to go and see new places and experience different things.”
