Champions League T20 To Make A Comeback! ECB Plans New World Club Championship
The England Cricket Board is planning to bring back a new version of the Champions League T20 called the World Club Championship.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is planning a new global T20-style event, which could be a fresh version of the discontinued Champions League T20 (CLT20). This new event, called the World Club Championship, is still in the early stages of planning but has already gained attention.
Champions League T20, which ran from 2009 to 2014, featured top franchise teams from India, Australia, South Africa, and other nations. It was shut down due to low public interest. Now, with the rise of global T20 leagues, the time may be right for its return.
ECB chief Richard Gould confirmed that a world-level club competition is “on the cards” for both men and women. However, unlike the past, England’s representation might come from The Hundred champions instead of the T20 Blast, as it features more domestic stars and franchise appeal.
Since CLT20 ended, many T20 leagues like ILT20 (UAE), SA20 (South Africa), MLC (USA), and The Hundred (England) have gained strong popularity. Even Guyana hosted a Global Super League last year involving teams from major T20 competitions.
The biggest challenge will be finding a free window in an already packed cricket calendar. With so many leagues happening year-round, getting all top teams and boards on board for one tournament may not be easy but the idea is certainly building momentum.
