“Bengaluru is Sports Passionate…” Rahul Dravid On Chinnaswamy Stampede During RCB’s Celebration
Rahul Dravid called the Bengaluru stampede "heartbreaking" and said such a tragedy should have never happened in a sports-loving city like this.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally won their first IPL trophy on June 3, and the city was full of joy and excitement. Thousands of fans gathered near Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate the win.
But the happiness soon turned into a disaster. A deadly stampede happened during the celebration, and sadly, 11 people lost their lives while many others were injured.
Rahul Dravid Shares His Thoughts On The Incident
Former India cricketer and Bengaluru’s own Rahul Dravid expressed his pain over the incident. Speaking to NDTV, Dravid said it was very sad and disappointing. He called Bengaluru a sports-loving city where people not only follow cricket but also enjoy other sports like football and kabaddi.
“Very disappointing. It’s very sad. Bengaluru is a sports-passionate city. I come from here. People over here love all sports, not just cricket. They follow all the sports and also all the sporting teams, be it a football team or a kabaddi team. It’s really heartbreaking that such an unfortunate incident happened. Our thoughts go out to everyone who unfortunately lost their lives and those who were injured. Such a tragedy shouldn’t have happened.”
Dravid, who was Rajasthan Royals’ head coach in IPL 2025, was also RCB’s icon player in the first-ever IPL season. He is one of the most respected names in Indian cricket and a proud son of Karnataka.
The stampede has shocked the entire cricket world. Some officials from RCB and KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) have resigned after the incident.
