“BCCI Ungrateful Board” – Fans Protest Against Ajit Agarkar and Gambhir for sacking Rohit Sharma from ODI captaincy
Rohit Sharma’s sacking as India’s ODI captain sparks fan outrage. Ajit Agarkar defends handing over leadership to Shubman Gill, saying it’s a long-term move ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
In a move that has shocked Indian cricket fans, the BCCI has removed Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain just days before the three-match series against Australia.
The decision, announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, has triggered massive backlash from supporters, who are calling it nothing short of a “betrayal” of one of India’s greatest leaders.
Shubman Gill has been named the new ODI captain, while Shreyas Iyer will serve as his deputy. The decision comes even as Rohit led India to the ICC Champions Trophy title earlier this year and the World Cup final last year.
Speaking at the press conference, Ajit Agarkar justified the decision, saying the selectors wanted to give Gill time to settle into the role ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“We don’t have too many fifty-over games before the next World Cup. We thought it’s the right time to hand over the captaincy to Shubman so he can build his team and plan long-term,” Agarkar said.
He also confirmed having spoken to Rohit before the announcement but did not disclose details of their conversation, calling it “personal.”
However, the explanation didn’t go down well with fans. The cricket community erupted on X (formerly Twitter), slamming Agarkar and the selection panel for what many termed as “disrespect” towards Rohit Sharma.
