AUS vs IND 2025: Shubman Gill Takes Over From Rohit Sharma as India Announce ODI Squad for Australia Series

Shubman Gill named India’s new ODI captain for Australia tour as Rohit and Kohli return for three-match series in October.

Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against Australia, marking a major transition in India’s leadership setup. The BCCI announced the squad on October 4, confirming Gill’s elevation and the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to international cricket after nearly eight months.

The series will be played from October 19 to 25, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney. Both Rohit and Kohli last featured in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 final win against New Zealand and have not played since the IPL concluded in June.

Having retired from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup and from Tests earlier this year, the veteran duo will now focus solely on ODIs, likely until the 2027 World Cup. Their comeback adds depth and experience to the squad, even as Gill steps into a new role as India’s all-format leader.

Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain, while KL Rahul will take the gloves as the main wicketkeeper, with Sanju Samson serving as backup. All-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel return to strengthen balance, though Hardik Pandya continues to recover from a quadriceps injury.

Among the fresh faces, Nitish Kumar Reddy receives his maiden ODI call-up after impressive domestic and India A performances. The pace attack will be led by Mohammed Siraj, supported by Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna, as Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for workload management. Kuldeep Yadav leads the spin department with Varun Chakravarthy adding variety.

The selectors also confirmed India’s T20I squad for the following five-match series, which will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav, with Gill as vice-captain. The squad remains largely unchanged from the one that lifted the Asia Cup 2025, though Bumrah and Hardik are both unavailable.

The full tour will run from October 19 to November 8, featuring three ODIs and five T20Is. For Gill, this will be his first test as ODI captain, beginning a new chapter in India’s post-Rohit era of limited-overs cricket.
